[Cjk] problem with Japanese and TeXLive8 fixes

Some time ago in an urgent need for disk space I removed my working
but rather obsolete CJK LaTeX setup. Now I wanted to introduce some
changes to my paper

and to my great disappointment I was unable to get working CJK LaTeX
again. I made several different attempts, including  the use of the 
Debian package prepared by Danai Sae-Han almost a year ago, and applying
the fixes from

        http://cjk.ffii.org/cjk/TeXLive8-CJK-fixes/

to TeXLive 2003.

In all cases I can generate and view correctly the dvi file, but dvips
and pdflatex are unable to find the Japanese fonts;

etc.

I solved the problem temporarily only and not fully satisfactorily (no
outlines fonts in PDF) by using ... TeXLive 6. Hence I am still
interested in a general solution, preferably Debian or TeXLive 2003
based.
